History of the Rosary
Rosary means "Crown of Roses". With the rosary, we reflect the mysteries of joy, sorrow and glory of Jesus and Mary. In the 12th century, Mary apperaed to Saint Dominic and gave him the rosary. Before any chasnges were made to the rosary, there were 150 beads, which were how many Psalms were in the Bible. In the 15th century, a Carthusian monk separated the rosary in 15 brackets, and a Dominican added mysteries to each of the decades. The mysteries were events in Jesus' life. In 2002, Pope John Paul ll said 2003 would be the "Year of the Rosary" because it was the first time in centuries a change was being made to the rosary. He added 5 new mysteries called the Luminous Mysteries. Today, the rosary is made up of 20 decades of the Hail Mary, the Our Father, and the Glory Be. The titles of the mysteries are the Joyful Mysteries, Sorrowful Mysteries, Glorious Mysteries, and Luminous Mysteries. We pray the rosary so we can remember Jesus' life and his mother Mary.
